I plan on covering reviews of beer I like as well as a blog showing my own brewing adventures.Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14193421617703904299noreply@blogger.comBlogger1125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8766716447372624959.post-27958377791953042632008-08-29T18:42:00.000-07:002008-08-29T18:58:04.484-07:00Blue Moon CloneMy first partial mash brew is a Blue Moon Clone from Austin Homebrew Supply. AHS is one of the best places to get homebrew kits, and supplies or pretty much anything you need for homebrewing beer. A little background on my homebrewing experience. I started out in the late 1990's, it might have been 1998 or 99. I started homebrewing beer with a Beer Machine(tm) from one of those TV info-mercials at 2am.

Now I have done my share of Extract Homebrewing and recently graduated into homebrewing method involving specialty grains and extract. The difference in flavor is quite remarkable. I think this is the way to go for a balance of taste, flavor and ease of technique for brewing.

The process is really easy, put all the grains in a steeping bag and let them steep at 155 F degrees for 45 minutes. After steeping rinse the grains with 1quart per 2lbs of grain water at 170 F degrees. I added approx 1.5 to 2lbs of the 5lbs of LME. Boiled for 60 minutes adding the bittering hops @ 60 min and the aroma at 15 minutes. At 10 minutes I added the coriander and orange peel. Then I did what is called a late addition of the rest of the LME at flameout to maintain the color nearest to the real Blue Moon.

The Recipe:

AHS Blue Moon Clone
Witbier

Type: Partial Mash
Date: 7/21/2008
Batch Size: 5.00 gal
Boil Size: 4.08 gal Asst Brewer:
Boil Time: 60 min Equipment: Brew Pot (5 Gallon)
Taste Rating(out of 50): 35.0 Brewhouse Efficiency: 75.0

Ingredients:

Amount Item Type % or IBU
5.00 lb Wheat Liquid Extract (8.0 SRM) Extract 55.6 %
1.50 lb Pilsner (2 Row) Bel (2.0 SRM) Grain 16.7 %
1.00 lb Oats, Flaked (1.0 SRM) Grain 11.1 %
1.00 lb White Wheat Malt (2.4 SRM) Grain 11.1 %
0.50 lb Wheat, Flaked (1.6 SRM) Grain 5.6 %
0.50 oz Ahtanum [6.00%] (60 min) Hops 8.5 IBU
0.50 oz Ahtanum [6.00%] (5 min) Hops 1.7 IBU
0.75 oz Coriander Seed (Boil 5.0 min) Misc
0.75 oz Orange Peel, Bitter (Boil 5.0 min) Misc
1 Pkgs Belgian Wit Ale (White Labs #WLP400) [Starter 750 ml] Yeast-Wheat

Beer Profile:

Est Original Gravity: 1.058 SG
Measured Original Gravity: 1.048 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.013 SG Measured Final Gravity: 1.010 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 5.8 % Actual Alcohol by Vol: 4.9 %
Bitterness: 10.2 IBU Calories: 211 cal/pint
Est Color: 7.0 SRM Color: Color

Carbonation and Storage:

Carbonation Type: Corn Sugar Volumes of CO2: 2.4
Pressure/Weight: 3.8 oz Carbonation Used: -
Keg/Bottling Temperature: 60.0 F Age for: 28.0 days
Storage Temperature: 52.0 F

Notes:Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14193421617703904299noreply@blogger.com0
